After 31 years, we’re introduced to Detective Frank Drebin’s son, Frank Drebin Jr., as he steps into his father’s famously clumsy shoes to solve a murder case and keep the Police Department from being shut down in The Naked Gun.
I have to admit, this was the most fun I’ve had at the cinema in a long time. Akiva Schaffer had big shoes to fill with the beloved original trilogy, but he truly rises to the occasion with this fourth instalment. And of course, this film wouldn’t be what it is without Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr. He’s pure comedy gold; I honestly couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role. (Almost) Every joke landed perfectly, and he had the whole audience in stitches.
Joining Neeson is Pamela Anderson as Beth, a sister who contacts Drebin about the mysterious circumstances surrounding her brother’s death, and from there, you can probably guess where things go. Anderson is absolutely brilliant in the role, I genuinely think she’s made for comedy. Her chemistry with Neeson is palpable, both comedically and romantically, making them a truly engaging leading duo. But in all honesty, the entire supporting cast contributes to making this a genuinely funny film, something that’s often hard to pull off, yet here it works effortlessly.

As with many comedy films, there will be jokes that don’t land for some people, but these are definitely designed for a modern audience, so most viewers are likely to relate to at least a few. While the film is written with a modern audience in mind, it also includes plenty of references for fans of the original trilogy to enjoy. However, if you haven’t seen the originals, don’t let that put you off, I think you’ll still have a fun time!
In an era where we’re seeing fewer comedy films on the big screen, I think The Naked Gun is exactly what we need. Sometimes it’s important to just go to the cinema and have a bit of fun, and that’s exactly what this film is.
The Naked Gun is out Friday, 1st August in the UK, and you can watch the trailer here:
