When the concept of an F1 film first came about, I can’t lie, I was sceptical. The sport is so interesting in itself, I couldn’t imagine how a film would work and whether it would do the sport justice, but after seeing the film, I can promise it did not disappoint.
I had the incredible opportunity to attend the European premiere of F1 in London on Monday, which was an unforgettable cinema experience in its own right. But the film itself was so insanely good that I haven’t stopped talking about it since!
The film follows Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt), who was dubbed ‘the greatest that never was’ after his F1 career in the 90s was ended by an accident on track, as he returns to the sport after being invited by former teammate Reuben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling Formula 1 team on the verge of collapse. On this team, Sonny is joined by the team’s rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), who is fighting to keep his seat.

Despite its 156-minute run-time, the film, much like the cars it showcases, absolutely flew by. It kept the entire audience gripped from start to finish, almost replicating the adrenaline rush of watching a live race. The film’s authenticity is undoubtedly enhanced by the fact that each race sequence was shot during real Grand Prix weekends, with the fictional team integrated into the real-world F1 environment. It’s also full of cameos that fans of the sport will appreciate, with Fred Vasseur delivering a particularly memorable moment.
The film is truly defined by its camera movements and cinematography, putting the audience directly into the driver’s seat to feel the full exhilaration of the sport, and if you get the chance to, I would encourage you to watch it in IMAX for the full experience. The incredible shots are accompanied by a stellar score, composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer and a star-studded soundtrack including names like Don Toliver and Doja Cat, Tate McRae, Ed Sheeran and many more, who all contribute tracks that perfectly complement the film’s energy.
Additionally, the film is elevated by a stellar cast. Brad Pitt and Damson Idris fully embody the chaos and intensity of life inside an F1 team, delivering performances that feel both grounded and gripping. They’re backed by strong supporting turns from Kerry Condon and Javier Bardem, creating a team dynamic that’s so convincing, you can’t help but root for them, even if they’re racing against your real-life favourite team.
Whilst F1 fans will find plenty to love, Joseph Kosinski does an incredible job of crafting this film to make it equally as engaging to newcomers, you don’t need to know the sport to be swept up in this story… and who knows? You might end up becoming a fan!
F1 is out in UK cinemas now!! And I really recommend going, this is definitely one of the films of the Summer and includes something for everyone
