Autumn

Autumn captures a family’s coming-of-age journey through a series of poignant snapshots, each framed around the eldest son’s visits home after leaving to study abroad. Speaking on the film, director António Sequeira said, “Growing up in the countryside of Portugal, I witnessed firsthand the struggles of its people, who often feel left behind in an ever-changing world. I believe it is now time for their voices to be heard. The film’s portrayal of intergenerational family connections is deeply relatable, offering viewers a chance to see reflections of their own stories woven into its narrative.

My only gripe with the film was that some characters felt difficult to connect with—but perhaps that was intentional. I found myself relating most to the character who mirrored aspects of my own life, and I imagine each viewer will connect with someone different. That, in itself, speaks to the film’s quiet power: it reflects the many ways we experience and understand family.
