It’s been a little while! I haven’t been very active on this blog and I could give a tonne of excuses as to why but I hope to do better this year, so before I start this new year in film with reviews etc. I thought I could summarise my 2024 in film!
Despite finishing University this year, I still managed to keep myself distracted from work by watching films, I ended the year having watched 37 more films than in 2023 (even though I had two months around diss season where I watched barely anything) and I finished my year on 42 trips to the cinema which was 16 more than the previous year. You may remember last year I listed every film I watched in the cinema, I won’t put you through that this time but I’ll share some of my favourite cinema experiences from the year!
My top isn’t even a film released in the last decade but actually from 2008, Twilight! Our local cinema did a really fun showing including a costume contest and fun posters in the toilets (photo below), what made it so enjoyable was that it was a room full of people who could laugh at every silly part of it. I had honestly never laughed so much as a film until that showing. Following that was probably Challengers for me; I know that so many people did not love this film but it was so fun to watch and I was fully engrossed both times I went to see it. Finally, I’ve got to mention Wicked because I don’t think I was as excited to see a film since Barbie last year, and it really did not disappoint.

As a girl who loves sad films I’ve also got to mention some of the ones that made me cry, the top was probably We Live in Time which I saw at an early screening last month. Next would probably be The Iron Claw and All of Us Strangers which I saw in the span of 3 days (probably too much but oh well!). Finally is The Outrun, which Saoirse Ronan is absolutely phenomenal in, and was such a beautiful story.
Cinema aside, my most-watched actor this year was Hugh Grant (I got very into the British romcoms towards the end of the year) and my most-watched director was Kenny Ortega (thanks to the Descendants marathon). Most predictably according to letterboxd, my top genres are ‘moving relationship stories’ and ‘touching and sentimental family stories’ so take of that what you will!
I’m gonna leave the main summaries there, however, my ever-changing ranking of 2024 releases is on my letterboxd here: https://boxd.it/rXZbc and all my individual ratings too.
I really think 2024 was a wonderful year for film, after 2023 I thought it would be a difficult year to follow but I have seen some incredible films to the point that I don’t know who I want to win in the awards season, so bring on 2025!
