‘Challengers’ was by far my most anticipated film of 2024, as a big Zendaya fan seeing her lead a film like this was already exciting but the trailers and hype surrounding this film had it heading straight to number one on my list.
When you are so excited to see a film there’s often a high likelihood it would let you down, especially when you’ve built up preconceived expectations but ‘Challengers’ really wasn’t that film… if anything it exceeded my expectations.
From the minute the film starts your attention is instantly grabbed and held for the entire film, you feel the same emotions you would watching world-class tennis players in an intense match and you completely forget that this is just a film. The motions throughout the film switching between the final match and the backstory are so well done and the way everything is so meticulously shot continues to hold your attention whilst also keeping you just a little bit stressed out the entire time.
Zendaya really shines as Tashi, I’ve always thought her to be an incredible actress but she had never been given the role to really show that off and I think this is that role, I would love to see her get some nominations for this role. Supporting her are Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor who have insane chemistry both with her and each other creating the perfect intense love triangle this film desires.
Luca Guadagnino was the perfect directorial choice for this film, I don’t know if anyone could’ve done it better – It’s receiving this critical acclaim for a reason!
Honestly just go and see this film! I don’t want to say too much about it because its best to go in not knowing too much and just enjoy the ride… It’s number one on my 2024 releases for a reason.
