The Oscar’s Best Pictures ranked

Every year I set myself the goal of watching every nomination in the Best Picture category for the Oscars and every year I fail…. Until this year!

One of the reasons I usually don’t succeed is likely because I hadn’t been open-minded enough to try films I wouldn’t usually see but last year when I got my unlimited I set a goal to see more films, including the ones that wouldn’t usually stand out to me and I’m so glad I did! This enabled me to see as many of the nominations as I could in the cinema and the rest at home. Thus I did what any Letterboxd user would do and ranked them, however, my rankings are from personal enjoyment, not which one is inherently the best.

Also before I share my ranking I wanted to emphasise how hard this was, I think this past year has been one of the best for film in a long time and there’s not a single film there I didn’t appreciate to some level!

10. Maestro

I decided to see Maestro at Cineworld with a live Q&A as opposed to watching on Netflix, mainly for the fact I could give it my full attention in the cinema. I found the film good but it lacked the sustenance to make it great! You could tell it was a passion project and it was enjoyable, it was just the weakest in the category in my opinion.

9. Poor Things

I know for many Poor Things is their favourite from the year and whilst it is visually stunning, the plot made me very uncomfortable. I do get the appeal for others though, it was just not a favourite for me!

8. The Zone of Interest

I really wish I had seen The Zone of Interest in cinemas, I think it was really good and the ending really stuck with me. I just enjoyed others in the category more!

7. American Fiction

I really enjoyed American Fiction, It was our secret screening at Cineworld and weirdly I hadn’t heard of it before! It was so funny but so raw at the same time and is an example of a brilliant script. Definitely watch this if you haven’t!

6. Killers of the Flower Moon

I would really love to see Lily Gladstone win the Oscar for Best Actress, I thought she was phenomenal in this role! I thought it was a really really good film, the only element I struggled with was the film length.

5. Anatomy of a Fall

This was the last of my Oscars watch and I wish I had seen it sooner, its a phenomenal film and of course, Messi (the dog) stole the show! I think again this is one I would have preferred to see in the cinema but I thought this was so good.

4. Oppenheimer

I’ve spoken about Oppenheimer before but it was just so good, an amazing cinema experience with an amazing cast!

3. Barbie

The main reason Barbie is in this position is the significant impact it had on the year, it was such an important film and I often think back to sitting in the screen surrounded by girls in pink. It’s rare to see a film unite people like that and Greta perfectly achieved it.

2. The Holdovers

I was not expecting to love The Holdovers as much as I did, the film feels like such a warm hug and will definitely be a new Christmas film tradition for me, just a beautiful film all around.

1. Past Lives

Past Lives is exactly what I love in a film, it’s a raw and real piece that many can relate to and sits with you afterwards which is why its my number 1!

and that’s my ranking! I’d be interested to see how other people ranked these films. I also want to apologise for the lack of posts! I’ve been very busy with my final year of university but have lots I want to talk about!
