As a musical movie and Timothée Chalamet lover, I was super excited to see Wonka and obviously had to make sure I was there the night it was released.
To be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, so I went into the film fairly blind (bar the trailer and production shots) but I really enjoyed it! It was a very cute feel-good family film which is exactly what was needed right now. Full of beautiful, vibrant sets, a fun story and a series of electrifying musical numbers it feels like the number one film to see this Christmas that everyone in the family will enjoy.
Was it a perfect film? No. But I don’t think it had to be – there is a simple but enjoyable plot which is easy to follow and pretty funny at some points (definitely heard some collective audience laughs) which is heightened by a collective of iconic actors, magical scenery and is full of nostalgia.
Timothée was incredible as the titular role, I honestly had no idea what to expect but he embodies Wonka as a character so well and it was refreshing to see him play a fun character for once. Accompanied by Calah Lane (Noodle) they make an entertaining and adorable film duo – I should obviously mention the rest of the cast too, featuring a whole crew of British icons who I tried to list but it was just too long who add so much comedy and charm to the film.
My only criticism is whilst the songs were fun, I didn’t find them catchy – whilst this is probably a positive for most that hate when songs just loop around in their head, it was a negative for me (as a musical lover) it just lacked a little bit for me, however, the routines did make up for that visually.
If you’re looking for an enjoyable Christmas watch I would definitely recommend Wonka, it’s fun for all ages!
(I apologise for how much I said fun)
