I need to talk about heartstopper

Art by Alice Oseman

So last year I wrote a post about book adaptations of my favourite books and what I thought about them and as you may know (I think most people do at this point) the webcomic series turned graphic novels ‘Heartstopper’ was just adapted into an 8 part series on Netflix, and I think it’s perfect!

I’m not going to pretend I’ve been the biggest heartstopper fan from the second it started, I knew about it but only read it last year when I had heard it was being adapted and the cast was announced. I don’t tend to read graphic novels very often which is probably part of the reason I had delayed reading them for so long but I loved them! Like the Netflix series, it’s just so cute and wonderful and it was just very refreshing to read (well the start at least, the last two volumes get a lot deeper).

Cut to this year and we start getting teasers and trailers and I wasn’t sure how it would be, all I could tell is it looked very British (lol), but I was super excited and counted down the days till release (I think all my friends can back that up).

So Friday arrives and I sit down to watch an episode or two and end up watching the whole season in one sitting, it really is just that good. I’ve been so thrilled to see the wide reception it’s receiving and how many people adore it as much as I do but also just how many people feel validated by this show. It’s so rare to see stories like this on the screen and it represents so many people, and it’s just such a wonderful thing. The amount of times I’ve cried at videos and edits of the show afterwards just releasing what it means to so many people is insane.

I’m so glad they kept Alice Oseman as the writer of the series as I don’t think it would be anything like it is without them and of course the wonderful cast, what a great job they did casting everyone!

Honestly, this is just a ramble at this point but I just wanted to say how good this show is and that you should go watch it! It really is a special show.
